Research has demonstrated that there is a positive and convincing relationship between family engagement and benefits for students, including improved academic achievement, increased trust between home and school and reduction of social class and racial stereotypes. Although this relationship holds across families of all economic, racial/ethnic, and educational backgrounds and for students at all ages students of African descent continue to have unequal education outcomes and families of African Descent continue to be blamed for this outcome. This session will deconstruct engagement and reconstruct it from an ABR perspective.
