In this session, I seek to build capacity for teachers and administrators to support the learning and excellence of racialized students while building an inclusive learning environment centred around anti-oppression and anti-racism. I forward a stance of "care and community before curriculum", while exploring how we can affirm student identities and teach through students' prior knowledge and lived experiences. I will concretize how to be a culturally responsive educator through various language-based activities that aim to increase opportunities to enhance learning experiences, well-being and success of racialized students. I connect all of this through exploring and deconstructing intentional texts (picture books and novels) that promote critical consciousness.
